COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

 

1. Course #1004-Effective Bible Reading (Phase I)

        Instructor: Rev. Lawrence E.Aker, III    

Textbook: Living By the Book, by H. Hendricks & W. D. Hendricks
This course identifies the appropriate methods, approaches and suggestions on how to read the Bible for spiritual growth and Christian maturity.  Areas that  will be covered include the structure of the Bible, resources for study, literary styles, etc.
 
2. Course #1033- Psalms, Book I (biblical studies)

        Instructor: Rev. Johnny Turner

Textbook: Psalms, Vol. I, by Knight, Westminster
This course introduces the Psalms, numbers 1-41.  Students will continue to review chiefly the prayers of faith in times of adversity.
 
3. Course #1038-Survey of Proverbs (biblical studies)

        Instructor: Rev . Duane Sleet, Sr.

Textbook: Proverbs, Westminster - This course is a collection of morals and philosophical presentations with a broad band of subjects presented in poetic form.  The book of Proverbs springs from human experiences and preserve some of Solomon's own sayings.
 
4. Course #1075-Synoptic Gospels (Phase 2)

        Instructor: Dr. Lee Roy Jefferson

Textbook: The Synoptic Gospels, revised and expanded,  Keith F. Nickle, Westminster
This course will focus on the Synoptic Gospels, Matthew, Mark and Luke.  Students will study the life and  ministry of Jesus Christ as portrayed by these three writers.  Through this comparative study, students will gain a more comprehensive understanding of Jesus' ministry.
 
5. Course #1079-Survey of John (phase 3)

        Instructor: Rev. Jerome Cunningham

Textbook: Survey of John and The Gospel of John, by William Barclay
This course will focus on the fourth Gospel and its uniqueness.  Students will identify the specific features that characterize John's Gospel and what distinguishes it from the Synoptic Gospels, with emphasis on  John's writings and the ministry of Jesus Christ.
 
6. Course #1095-Survey of Ephesians-(biblical studies)

        Instructor: Rev. Jenal Hardaway

Textbook: The Letters to the Galatians & Ephesians
This course will focus on Ephesians with emphasis on the authorship, date and recipients of this letter.  This letter, while confirming the role of Christ in the Church, also highlights responsible Christian living and unity
in Christ.
 
7.  Course #1112-Survey of Revelation-(phase 4)

         Instructor: Mrs. Wellma L. Matthews

Textbook: The Revelation of Jesus Christ, by John Walvoord, Moody Publishers
This course will focus on the book of Revelation with an emphasis on authorship, date, theme, and recipients. The prophetic themes, symbols and interpretations of various revelations will be discussed.
 
8.  Course #2015-Foundations of Christian Ethics - (phase 4)

         Instructor: Rev. Curtis L. Whitney

Textbook: Christian Ethics-Options & Issues, by Norman Geisler
This course explores the philosophical and Christological approaches to Christian ethics.  Students will
engage in biblical principles for decision-making and conduct for living.
 
9.  Course #4014-Doctrine of Prayer; (Elective)

         Instructor: Deaconess Tommie Joiner

Textbook:  The complete works of E. M. Bounds on Prayer by E. M. Bounds
This course is designed to teach the fundamental purpose, principles and power of prayer. It looks into prayer as the channel of communication for the believer to the Father.
 
10. Course #4033-The Challenge of the Cults- (Theology)

          Instructor: Rev. Larry Washington

Textbook: What the Cults Believe, by Irvine G. Robertson, Moody, Publishers
This course presents the challenge to the Baptist Faith of cults that frequent society.  Time will be spent
discovering methods to defeat their causes as well as ways to heal those who have been scarred by their
devastating effects.
 
11. Course #8036-Church and Society (phase 4)

          Instructor: Rev. Alphonzo Greene

Textbook: Being the Body by Charles Colson & Ellen Vaughn
The aim of this course is to comparatively view the place of the Christian in the context of society.  Students
will focus on biblical references that define the role of the Church in terms of living in the world and interacting with those outside of the church.  The separation of Church and state will be discussed.
