FOUNDED

July 14, 1984 -

Under the leadership of Dr. Harry S. Wright

HISTORY

The Male Chorus of Cornerstone Baptist Church was organized on July 14, 1984 under the leader of  Harry S. Wright, Pastor Emeritus. The first rehearsal was attended by seven men whom shall be called:

"The Original Seven"

Deacon Althea Alvarez        Mr. Rupit Allman            Deacon Jeremiah Dobson    Deacon Leroy Jackson        Deacon John Searles        Mr. Anthony Walston        Mr. James Williams

The first director was the former Deacon Fred Clark, who is now known as Reverend Fred Clark. On August 9th, 1984 the first election was held, and the new officers were:

                        President:    Anthony Walston                          Vice President:    Joseph Baker       

                        Secretary: Thomas Ford, Jr.                             Treasurer:    Rupit Allman                 

                        Business Manager: James Williams             Chaplain:    Althea Alverez

                                                            Asst. Chaplain:       Maco James

After Reverend Clark's departure, the Male Chorus was blessed in 1985 with a very good directress, Mrs. Ethel Copper Williams. But once again, it was a short time because Mrs. Williams left and the Chorus sang a cappella for a while and prayed much.

The Male Chorus has been blessed with many directors:

                                                            Mr. Leonard Carter           1996 -2000 & 2003 - Present

Even though the Male Chorus was organized in 1984, we did not celebrate our first Anniversary until 1987. We thank God Almighty for "the great things that he has done for us."

In February 200, Mr. Leonard Carter resigned as our Director. Under Leonard's leadership, our chorus' membership has grown to about 30 men. Upon Leonard's resignation, the chorus once again gathered our musical resources and sang a cappella. During that time, Mr. Alphonso Johnson served as our Interim Director.

From January - May 2001, Mr. Alphonso Johnson served as our musical Director. From June 2001 - January 2002, Mr. Dennis Washington served as our Interim Director. On February 5, 2002, Pastor Harry S. Wright introduced Sid Smith as our new Director. With Sid Smith as our Director and Dennis Washington as accompanist, our choir began to grow musically and spiritually once more. But as we all know, time does bring about change. On  May 4, 2003, Sid Smith resigned as our Director due to relocation. However, with much prayer and the Lord saw it fit to bring Brother Leonard H. Carter back to Cornerstone as our Director on May 13, 2003.

In keeping with our church's theme for the year of our Lord 2004, we the Cornerstone Baptist Church Male chorus stand firm and are ready to "move to another level." And in keeping with our own chorus motto "we will make a joyful noise unto the Lord" as found in Psalm 100:1
